I’m Still Grateful

by Andy on December 7, 2009

I just wanted to share this very quickly because the irony is just too sweet. I mentioned in my last post entitled: had a bad day feeling down two things I was grateful for. One of them was that none of my children are ill, and the other was that my son hasn’t set the house on fire.

I wrote that post on Saturday.

During the early hours of Sunday morning I was woken for the ninth time, bleary eyed and tending my four year old daughter who has evidently contracted flu! I was in and out of my bed so often I even considered staying awake for the whole night.

The thing is, had I done so my son wouldn’t have had a chance to do what he did. Oh yes, while I was asleep for the last stretch just before dawn, my eight year old son took himself downstairs. This is something he normally does, but normally he watches TV quietly and can be trusted to do so.

I was woken by my wife around 6.30 asking if I could smell burning. I rushed downstairs to discover that my boy had been busy lighting candles with matches. Nice!

I wasn’t exactly pleased but I still feel fortunate on two counts:

  1. My daughter’s illness will doubtless improve over the next few days, i.e. it’s not very serious.
  2. My son didn’t actually set the house on fire – just the candles!

I guess life is changeable and doesn’t always pan out the way you think it should. I’m just glad I was able to see the funny side. Only a few months ago I might have seen this as further evidence that my life was a mess and prove beyond doubt that the world is against me.

So it’s probably a good job life is changeable, eh?

Andy.
