Grant, the book sounds good. Another one for my list for sure.

I think the problem with reality is spotting the true reality as opposed to our perceived reality. A reality created through the filters we've applied to it.

I know what you mean though. I have been guilty of ignoring reality in the past and I have paid the price.

It's great that you've taken the time to comment here. Thank you. I want you to know that this project is currently sidelined whilst I deal with my own reality (so it's perfect timing that you raise this issue). I still monitor the site and may return to it later. Just wanted you to know.

The Brain That Changes Itself is another amazing book, it isn't a self help book by any means, but it's a study on neuro plasticity which tells us how our brain is a creature of habit that forces itself to change and adapt to whatever we choose it to.

Other studies the book covers are things like phantom limbs, how people who lose a hand still sense the hand their because the brain has not yet changed to believe there is no hand there.

Also covers strokes, various types of mental disorders, and a girl with only half a brain in which one side of the brain overcompensated the lack of other side and do functions on which it were used to believe to be impossible.

It's amazing because self-help could never really be backed up with real scientific evidence, but this book is as close as it gets.

It's all hopeful stuff, but never forget the power of reality. Despite your goals, you may have to accept disappointment in your life a nice few times. A saying I was "Reality has teeth, and it bites hard when it's ignored"

Long story short, your skill improving may get amazing, and you can be THIS close to getting what you want, than you get hit by a bus. No book in the world is gonna help ya with that problem. lol

Grant, thanks for the tip on the book, I'll have a look at it.

Trying to control life is pretty futile isn't it? All we can really do is control our response to it and even then we're fighting against human nature.

As you say pursuing my dreams and having no regrets is a fine goal, even if the balance is not always easy to achieve.

Thanks.

Self Help in general is overrated.

The only good self help book out there is "Feeling Good" by Dr. David D. Burns. Simply due the fact that it doesn't promise to change anything in our life, just your attitude about it.

In fact, it is our need to improve and our desires that creates cognitive distortions that results in depression.

Human beings have a need for control, and that's what most if not all self help books advertise, a new piece of the puzzle where a human being can have more control in his/her life.

It seems to be in our nature to give little regard to how cruel life can actually be.

- There is no book that teaches a fish not to bite the hook, and a fish desperately needs one for its survival.
- There is no book to the men who lost their lives in war.
- There is no book for our grandfathers who probably suffered alot more than we did.

Now here's the thing, reality is cruel, but dwelling on that is even worse than dreaming. In fact, if I would choose either, I would be the dreamer reading self help books a lot sooner than be the hopeless dweller, because learned hopelessness is a cause of some seriously f***ed up attitudes.

No matter how many motivational speeches you hear, or books you read. No matter how many people bring you down and say you're no good, as you mature, you'll come closer and closer to the attitude of "I'll pursue my dreams till I'm dead, if it never happens, I'm dead anyways. I couldn't care less! But not trying will be the biggest regret or tragedy"

That's my logic anyways.
